It is all about connecting your shiny new sound system or the AV receiver. You have to decide what to buy- the HDMI cables or the fiber optic cables. As the home theater system is becoming complex in configuration (including the wiring of the system) you might choose HDMI over fiber cables.

Think about the age old days when you just need the coaxial cable to get the audio and video signals to the TV set. But, nowadays, when you think of connecting the system with the sound, Blu-ray music players, and another high-definition programming unit, you have to go through certain difficult procedures. Here, in this blog, you should know the difference between these cables, their functions and which is better to choose-

Talking About the Basics-

Both the HDMI and fiber optic cables transmit the audio from one device to another. Even there is no such difference when you think the multi-channel audio like Dolby digital to other devices. The main difference between these two cables is that the HDMI cords transmit the high-resolution audio that includes the format like Dolby Digital, DTS HD Master Audio, and many more.

On the other hand, the fiber optic cables cannot transmit the high definition audio formats. Besides, the HDMI cables also transmit the video signals. Thus, if you do not like to manage multiple cables between two devices, it is better to choose the HDMI cable rather than fiber-optic ones.

But in the case when you have the older receiver or the TV that does not support the HDMI, the best choice is the fiber optic cords, which are highly feasible and functional.

Let’s Check the Comparison-

1. The Construction

In the HDMI cable, copper is the main component. It is affordable, and there are high chances of interference. On the other hand, the fiber optic cables are made with fiber optics, which is a bundle of tiny glass strands. These cables are expensive and transmit light, not electricity.

2. Audio Connection

The fiber optic cables mainly support the sound up to 5.1 channels. While the HDMI cables support the Blue-Ray sound qualities like the Dolby TrueHD formats and DTS HD. So, if you love watching the audio in the Dolby digital option, you should choose the HDMI as it is the best choice.

3. Video Connection

HDMI cables are used to transmit both the audio and video files. It eliminates the need for other cables. However, when you are choosing the fiber optic cable, you will have to use the second type of cable to transmit the video signal. The total cost of these cables can be even higher than the HDMI cable alone. Hence, do extensive research before you are buying these cables. Several online sites offer a wide range of cables, from Analog cable to HDMI cables. You can choose the one that you prefer.

Bottom Line- HDMI cables can serve all your needs. It is less expensive and simplifies the entire connection set-up. With a wide range of features and upgradability, you do not have to think about the wire jungle.
